Why your business website needs to score 90+ on Google PageSpeed

Most business websites score under 50. If yours is one of them, you're losing customers before they even see what you offer.

What is Google PageSpeed?

Google PageSpeed Insights is a free tool that scores your website's performance from 0 to 100. It measures how quickly your site loads and becomes interactive for visitors. You can test any site at pagespeed.web.dev.

Scores break down like this:

  • 0-49: Poor. Your site is actively hurting your business
  • 50-89: Needs improvement. You're leaving money on the table
  • 90-100: Good. Your site is working for you, not against you

Why does it matter for your business?

1. Google uses it for rankings

Since 2021, Google has officially used page experience signals (including loading speed) as a ranking factor. A faster site doesn't guarantee position one, but a slow site makes it significantly harder to rank. If you're trying to rank for “plumber in Halifax” or “roofer near me”, site speed is part of the equation.

2. Visitors leave slow sites

Google's own research shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. For every additional second of load time, conversion rates drop by an average of 4.42%. If your site takes 8 seconds to load (common for WordPress sites with heavy themes), you've lost over half your potential customers before they see your first headline.

3. It affects your credibility

First impressions are formed in milliseconds. A sluggish website tells visitors your business is outdated, careless, or not worth their time. Especially for service businesses. If your website is slow, potential customers wonder what your actual service will be like.

Why are most business websites so slow?

The overwhelming majority of small business websites are built on WordPress with heavy themes and page builders like Elementor or Divi. These tools are designed to make building easy, not to make sites fast. They load enormous CSS files, dozens of JavaScript libraries, and render-blocking resources that bring your site to a crawl.

Add an unoptimised hero image, a few plugins for forms and analytics, and you're looking at a 30-50 PageSpeed score on mobile. This is the reality for most web agency clients in West Yorkshire and across the UK.

How we build sites that score 95+

At Webvise, we don't use WordPress. Every site is built with Next.js, a modern React framework that generates static HTML at build time. This means:

  • Minimal JavaScript: only what's needed, nothing extra
  • Pre-rendered pages: HTML is ready before the browser even asks for it
  • Optimised images: automatically compressed and served in modern formats
  • No bloated themes: every line of code serves a purpose

The result? Our client sites consistently score 95-100 on Google PageSpeed. You can verify every score on Google's own tool. We publish them publicly on our portfolio page.

What should you do?

Start by testing your current site at pagespeed.web.dev. If you're scoring under 50, you have a problem that's actively costing you business. Under 70, there's significant room for improvement.

If your site is built on WordPress with a heavy theme, no amount of caching plugins will get you to 90+. The architecture is the problem. You need a site built for speed from the ground up.

That's what we do. Get in touchand we'll tell you honestly whether your current site can be saved or whether a rebuild is the smarter investment.
