How is this different from website updates?
Maintenance is the work that happens whether you ask or not: patches, dependencies, certificates, monitoring. Website updates are the changes you request, like a new page, new photos or a price that has moved. You notice updates because you asked for them. You should never notice maintenance.
Do I have to pay a monthly fee for this?
Every build includes maintenance and upkeep after launch, so this is not a subscription bolted onto the price to make the headline figure look smaller. Sites that need something beyond the normal upkeep, like a large integration to keep in step with a third party, get quoted for that specifically.
What if my site was built by somebody else?
It can sometimes be taken on, and it depends what it is built with. A modern codebase is usually straightforward. A WordPress site carrying a long list of plugins is a different proposition, and you will get an honest view on whether maintaining it or rebuilding it is the better use of your money.
What happens if the site goes down?
The monitoring alerts within minutes rather than whenever somebody happens to look. Most outages are the host rather than the site, and those get chased directly. You get told what happened and what was done about it, not a vague apology.
