What the business needed

HME Civil Engineering Limited is Henry Emsley's consultancy in Hebden Bridge: structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering, drainage and highways design, and project management with CDM compliance, for homeowners, developers, architects, contractors and the public sector across West Yorkshire and the North West.

For a chartered engineer the credentials are the product. CEng and MICE, CHAS Elite, CSCS and SMSTS had to be visible, and the thirteen five-star Google reviews had to be shown rather than summarised.

What was built

Four pages: home, projects, contact and privacy, with the services as sections on the homepage. The hero carries a download button for the real capabilities brochure as a PDF. A project gallery component does double duty: nine labelled projects on the homepage, and the same component on the projects page adding eight more photographs in a lightbox.

The reviews strip is a hand-written animation loop with no slider library, duplicating the thirteen reviews so the loop is seamless and pausing on hover. The mobile navigation is a full-screen overlay rather than a drawer. Anchor links know whether the section is on the current page and scroll with a header offset, or navigate normally to another route.

The site has no CSS framework at all: hand-written styles with a small class naming convention, chosen so the client's site carries no build tooling risk beyond Next itself. Images are plain img elements with explicit dimensions and lazy loading, because a static export has no image server.

Credentials as structured data

The ProfessionalService markup carries the founder as a Person with CEng and MICE modelled as EducationalOccupationalCredential entries, and an offer catalogue of the five service lines.

A rating that matches the page

The aggregate rating in the markup is 5.0 from 13 reviews, and there are exactly thirteen reviews rendered on the page. The two numbers were never allowed to drift apart.

Hardened static hosting

A hand-tuned .htaccess forces HTTPS and trailing slashes, caches assets for a year, compresses responses and blocks direct requests to environment and package files.

Spam handled without a captcha

An invisible honeypot plus a three-second cooldown on the submit button, posting to Formspark. No backend and nothing for a genuine enquirer to solve.

Getting it found

Keywords are specific to the disciplines and the towns: civil engineer Halifax, structural engineer Hebden Bridge, geotechnical engineer West Yorkshire, flood risk assessment, biodiversity net gain, CDM compliance. The site canonicalises to the .com domain, with the .co.uk also resolving.

Under the hood

What the site runs on. The same approach is described on the service pages it came from.

  • Next.js 15, static export
  • React 19 and TypeScript
  • Hand-written CSS, no framework
  • Formspark with honeypot and cooldown
  • Project gallery with lightbox
  • ProfessionalService schema with credentials
  • Hardened Apache .htaccess
  • Self-hosted analytics
