Website design for builders and home improvement firms

Someone choosing who to trust with a kitchen, an extension or a whole house looks at the work before they ring. We have built sites for a multi-trade builder on the Sussex coast, a renovation firm working across three regions and a decorator in the Calder Valley.

From £495, with domestic and commercial work on one site if you do both.

What a builder's website needs

From three builds, one of them audited against its own Search Console data.

A page for every service people search

Nobody searches for “home improvements”. They search for a kitchen fitter, a loft conversion, a wet room. Design & Style has a page each for kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, accessible bathrooms and refurbishments, each with its own title and keywords, and HP Building Services has around thirty domestic service pages.

Town pages that pass the swap test

Fourteen of HP Building Services' seventeen town pages failed a uniqueness check against each other. Each was rewritten around that town's housing stock, weather exposure and building problems, and the worst pair went from 73.6% duplicate to 20.3%. Home Hues' town pages describe each place's terraces, stone and listed buildings.

The work shown properly, without the weight

Before and after is what sells building work. HP Building Services' slider runs without a library and works by keyboard. Recompressing the photos took the image library from 86.5MB to 7.7MB and the weight of the homepage's first screen from 4.4MB to 377KB.

An enquiry that arrives with the job understood

Design & Style's form asks for the type of work, a budget band and a timescale, so the first conversation is about the job rather than about the form. A decorator needs less: Home Hues asks for the postcode and the job type, and WhatsApp opens with the quote request already written.

What goes into a builder's site

Whichever size you need. The services and towns you actually cover decide the page count.

  • A page for each service you offer
  • Before and after gallery that works on a phone
  • Enquiry form with work type, and budget where it helps
  • Town pages only where there is something true to say
  • Domestic and commercial tracks if you work for both
  • LocalBusiness and Service structured data
  • Photos compressed so the first screen stays light
  • Your rating as text, linked to the reviews
  • Tap-to-call number on every screen
  • Analytics that loads only after consent

Questions builders ask

I do kitchens, bathrooms and extensions. One page or several?
Several. Each is a different search made by a different customer, and one page trying to rank for all of them tends to rank for none. Design & Style's kitchen and bathroom pages are optimised separately, region by region, and HP Building Services' renovations page got its own rewrite once its Search Console data showed it at position 47.
I work for homeowners and for landlords or managing agents. Do I need two sites?
No. HP Building Services runs a domestic track and a commercial track from one site, with different copy, form fields and calls to action for each, so a managing agent looking for planned maintenance or a void turnaround never lands on a page about bathroom refits.
Should the enquiry form ask for a budget?
For bigger jobs, as an optional band rather than a box to fill. Design & Style's form offers bands from under £3,000 to over £30,000 alongside the type of work and a timescale, so a survey visit is booked with the job already understood. For smaller work, like Home Hues' decorating, a postcode and a job type is enough.
Can I put my Checkatrade or Google rating on the site?
On the page, yes, as long as it is current and linked. In the structured data, no, because Google does not show stars for a business's reviews of itself. HP Building Services' old site claimed a 151-review rating in the markup of all fifty pages; that was taken out as a policy risk, while the visible “150+ reviews on Google” badge stayed, because it is true.
How much does a builder's website cost?
£495 for 1 to 5 pages and £850 for 5 to 15, which covers most firms with a handful of services. Anything larger, like HP Building Services' fifty-five routes, is quoted on enquiry. All of them are a one-time fee with no retainer, and you own the site.
